About Us

St. Colmcille’s N.S. is a rural mixed 3 Teacher school situated about 6 miles from Athlone. Most of the children live in the vicinity of the school and a bus service also brings children to school.  The school currently has an enrolment of 72 pupils. Junior Infants & Senior Infants are in one classroom while 1st, 2nd &  3rd Class are in the next classroom & 4th, 5th & 6th Classes are in the Senior Room.

Our school has 3 mainstream classrooms, 1 learning support room / Resource Room and a G.P. Room. We are very lucky in that we have an Interactive Whiteboard in every classroom, computers in the classrooms as well and we recently got a class set of iPads which the Parents Association bought for us. Within our school grounds we have beautiful landscaped gardens and extensive playing facilities which include one very large play area, a pitch for playing Gaelic, Hurling, Tag-Rugby and other sports, a basketball court and a tarmacadam area so we can play soccer during the winter months.

Ballinahown itself is a rural picturesque village about 6 miles outside Athlone on the Westmeath Offaly border. It has won the Tidiest Small Village Award for the last number of years in the Westmeath in the Tidy Towns Competition. It is part of the Parish of Lemonaghan which includes Rashina, Boher & Pullough, all of which have schools located in them.

Our school was built in 1982, on a new green field site, when two schools Bloomhill N.S. and Ballinahown N.S. amalgamated. The old Ballinahown N.S., which is a two-storey building still stands in the village & currently houses the ‘Ballinahown Tea Rooms’.
In our beautiful landscaped gardens the children, together with their teachers, are all involved in the planting and growing of flowers. Bird boxes & Bird Tables are also distributed around the grounds to cultivate an interest in wild life in the children. The school also has access to the wooded area at the back of the school which is maintained by the Ballinahown Development Committee. In this area there is a collection of features which cultivate bio-diversity.
This concept of Environmental Awareness & Care is cultivated throughout the school & we are currently working towards our 5th Green Flag.
